Denver to Pilot Road Closures this Weekend in LoDo

Denver – The City and County of Denver will temporarily close two blocks to vehicle traffic this weekend to pilot its impact on managing crowd sizes and congestion in LoDo, improving pedestrian egress and preventing violence.

The move is in response to requests from residents and businesses to better manage crowds and vehicle volumes and improve safety in the area, particularly as Halloween approaches. In a joint statement from District 10 City Councilman Chris Hinds, District 9 City Councilman Darrell Watson and District 1 City Councilwoman Amanda Sandoval, the representatives praised the neighborhoods for engaging with their elected officials, saying “we hear your concerns and will continue to explore ways to make a positive difference in the downtown experience.”

Denver will close Market Street between 19th and 20th Streets and Larimer Street between 20th and 21st Streets this Friday and Saturday nights (Oct. 27 and 28) from approximately 10:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. See attached map. The result will be an elimination of vehicles on these blocks where people tend to gather in the late night and early morning hours. Removing traffic flow and parked vehicles from these two blocks will also increase officers’ visibility of potentially dangerous or illegal activity occurring so that it can be quickly addressed.

Parking meters on the 1900 block of Market Street and the 2000 block of Larimer Street will also be bagged while vehicle travel is diverted around the area and removed afterwards for utilization by patrons during the day. The departments will gauge whether the effort has a positive impact and if future closures will be used for safety and crowd management.
