Denver’s second encampment resolution successfully brings 61 unhoused residents indoors, site permanently closed to camping
Mayor Mike Johnston’sHouse1000 initiative is gaining momentum, with its second encampment closure resulting in 61 unhoused residents moving indoors where they can access case management, wraparound support services, and a pathway to permanent housing.
The encampment closure was completed Nov. 1, bordered by Broadway Avenue, Curtis, 20thand Arapahoe streets. The area now is permanently closed to any camping, and the city is working with local businesses and residents to ensure the area remains clear of encampments moving forward.
“This is another historic moment for Denver,” said Mayor Mike Johnston. “We officially permanently closed our second encampment by moving all of the individuals at that encampment indoors. This is another confirmation that we know our strategy works, and we will continue to prioritize this strategy to help 1,000 Denverites get off the street and into safe, stable units.”
Outreach teams visited the site throughout October and identified approximately 50 unhoused residents for relocation indoors to shelter accommodations. A total of 55 people moved to non-congregate hotel shelter, and six individuals transitioned to existing Tiny Home Villages operated by the Colorado Village Collaborative.
This marks Denver’s second successful encampment resolution and follows a similar effort from earlier this fall at 8thAvenue and Logan Street. Together, the two encampment closures brought more than 140 people indoors.
