DENVER, November 8, 2023 — In a letter dated November 8, 2023, Mayor Mike Johnston formally accepted the three amendments to his proposed 2024 budget that were passed by the Denver City Council over the past two weeks. The city charter required the mayor to accept or veto the amendments on or before November 10. All of the amendments were passed with a veto-proof majority.
The three amendments are:
Amendment 23-1645: Added an additional $13.5 million for the Temporary Rental and Utility Assistance (TRUA) program, bringing the total 2024 funding to $29.1 million. The program promotes stability among residents facing a housing crisis and possible eviction through rental assistance.
Amendment 23-1646: Added an additional $550,000 to the Vision Zero program to end traffic deaths by 2030, bringing the total 2024 funding for Vision Zero to $2.2 million.
Amendment 23-1649: Added an additional $450,000 for Safe Routes to School, which creates safe, equitable environments for kids to travel to and from school, bringing the total 2024 funding for the program to $2.7 million.
Council President Jamie Torres stressed the importance of the amendments. “We are pleased to have found a way forward in adding over $18 million dollars to these critical program areas,” she said, “particularly when it comes to rental assistance that will help keep people in their homes. I thank all the council members for being such dedicated representatives and I thank the mayor and his team for their partnership to adopt these critical amendments into the 2024 budget.”
The next step in the 2024 budgeting process is the final approval of the amended budget by the Denver City Council, which must occur on Monday, November 13, per the city charter.
