Mayor Mike Johnston today announced a new partnership between the City and County of Denver and Housing Connector, a non-profit tech company that connects individuals and service providers to vacant permanent housing units.
Housing Connector utilizes its tech platform to partner with both housing and service providers to reduce barriers and increase access to permanent housing for Denverites experiencing or exiting homelessness. To date, Housing Connector has housed more than 5,600 people experiencing housing instability, and the vast majority of those individuals have had long-term housing success. This new partnership will create a coordinated system that makes it easier for individuals to move directly into permanent leased units.
“We are thrilled to announce our new partnership with Housing Connector,” said Mayor Mike Johnston. “This approach will help us deliver on our goal of ensuring every Denverite is housed by getting people directly into leased, permanent units and helping them stay housed for years to come.”
Through this new partnership with the City and County of Denver, Housing Connector will scale their service in Denver to increase the speed of move-ins while removing barriers and housing discrimination by pre-negotiating screening criteria with housing providers.
“We can’t solve our housing crisis without our partners in the multifamily industry,” said Housing Connector Executive Director Shkëlqim Kelemendi. “We know that when a unit sits vacant it’s a financial loss for the property and it’s a lost opportunity for our community. We need to invest in pragmatic solutions that make it easy for property owners and managers to open more doors to folks in the community.”
This partnership will support the city’s House1000 efforts and beyond by giving service providers and outreach teams a new tool to support their clients on their path to housing stability.
“We are excited to partner with Housing Connector to serve those impacted by housing displacement in the Denver Metro area,” said Matt McAdams, Site Director for The Salvation Army Crossroads Center. “We know folks who can immediately benefit from this partnership. Through collaborative efforts and shared resources, we will address the needs of the community to urgently resolve experiences of displacement. We’re better together: by collectively providing ongoing support to our neighbors, we hope to be a part of ending housing displacement in Denver.”
“The Apartment Association of Metro Denver is proud to support Housing Connector. Our board played an important role in bringing them to the Denver market. As our owner/operator members from the apartment association lead the way as early program adopters, we anticipate a growing number of our members embracing this vital initiative. Additionally, our association extends its support to other organizations committed to mitigating homelessness risk, such as Entryway and Family HomeStead. We are enthusiastic about our ongoing collaboration with organizations that are at the forefront of addressing one of the most pressing challenges in our city by focusing on the root causes, short-term supportive housing, long-term stable employment opportunities and permanent housing solutions.”
