• Highly proficient in TIG and MIG welding for sheet metal (steel and aluminum).
• Ability to butt-weld sheet metal panels together or butt-weld in a patch panel.
• Operate metal shaping, straightening, and bending machines, such as power hammer, English wheel, brakes, and shears.
• Develop templates and models for welding projects, using factory specifications or patterns from the other side of a car body.
• Create and use jigs, to fabricate one-off automotive panels to specifications.
Secondary Skills
• Layout, position, modify, and align sheet metal, prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, angle finders, and rulers.
• Clamp, use clecos, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
• Determine required equipment and welding methods, applying knowledge of metallurgy, geometry, and welding techniques.
• Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.
• Grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter, using hand scrapers or portable grinders.
• Remove high and low spots from panels, using hand weights, hammer/dollies, and hand files.
• Check grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometers, calipers, and precision measuring instruments.
• Dismantle rusted panels by drilling out spot welds, cut off wheels, and burr tools.
